Delicious Fruit is a short experimental video utilizing recontextualized footage of Sergei Parajanov’s archetypal film The Color of Pomegranates (1968). The Color of Pomegranates is an experimental film about the life and hardships of the legendary Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova. Subtle parallels can be drawn between the protagonist's struggle in coming of age and renouncing his love for his faith and Parajanov’s own difficult path for freedom. Parajanov was exiled from Georgia on accusations that he was a homosexual and that his film portrayed Armenian nationalism.
Several scenes in Parajanov's film contain sexual imagery, hints of homoerotic imagery and gender-bending. Three snippets have been chosen and translated through a queer lens. Delicious Fruit depicts a feminist renaming of the symbolism of the pomegranate (women's fertility in Armenian culture), homoerotic cruising and fantasy.
